Crown Lane Primary School – The Power of Teamwork

Crown Lane Primary School – The Power of Teamwork

How Sportinspired supported Crown Lane Primary School to expand its pupils’ horizons – and develop the school’s ‘Superpower of Collaboration’.

The Challenge

Crown Lane Primary School in Streatham, London is in an area of high deprivation, where many families struggle to pay for sports clubs for their children, even though the school tries to keep costs as low as possible and is always looking for opportunities to help its pupils expand their horizons and the possibilities open to them.

The Solution

Take up SportInspired’s invitation to attend several different multi-sports festivals and attend the follow-up legacy clubs. This will help the school and its children develop a much better sense of team work, and enable the kids to try out a wider range of sports (and participate in long-term) they may not have thought about trying otherwise.

"The immediate impact of the festival itself, the fantastic resource of being able to offer free clubs for ten weeks to our children who would not necessarily have these opportunities otherwise, and the opportunity to continue these clubs where possible [are priceless]."
– Ruth Grimwood, Deputy Head, Crown Lane Primary School

"All children who went to the festivals came back absolutely buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm about the different sports they had tried out - and especially the group who won the Team Spirit Award! This was a great award that we could keep referring back to and build on once we were back at school - it was also celebrated in the whole school assembly and linked back to our school values and learning superpowers."

The Impact

Enabled the children to be more aware of other key skills that go along with being a good sports person, including team work, resilience and controlling one’s emotions, e.g. if you lose.

Widened the school’s outlook that they could have a far wider range of sports offerings (other than just football).

Enhanced the school’s enrichment offer to the children, and expanded the number of sports the kids are able to participate in.

“Our school has benefitted greatly from our inclusion in the SportInspired programme.  We have taken part in several of the multi-sports festivals. All the children who attended were enthused to try out different sports and activities, and to develop their team work skills further (especially the group who won the Team Spirit Award!).

Following on from this, the opportunity to enhance our enrichment offer to the children and expand the number of sports they are able to participate in has been fantastic. We ran a multi-sports club last term and this term are building further links with community organisations, such as the Croydon Pirates, who are running a baseball club for us this term.

The fact that the first ten weeks of the club are free for the children means that lots of them are able to try out new sports, and it also supports building a legacy of longer-lasting opportunities for our children, who would not receive such opportunities otherwise."
