Prevention is better than cure, so let’s do more of that!
The idea that taking early action reduces the need for more expensive or intensive action later is instilled into us from an early age. From applying sun screen to getting vaccinated, prevention, after all, is better than cure.
The same applies to social issues such as child safety and wellbeing: investment in early intervention is not only a more cost-effective strategy than more conventional approaches, it also provides the best opportunities for creating lasting, positive change.
Every child or young person should have the opportunity to engage in physical activity and enjoy its benefits in a safe, supportive, and trustworthy environment, with an equal opportunity to reach their full potential. That’s why we help 9-year-olds kick-start healthy habits strong enough to last a lifetime — intervening at this age gives the greatest chance of sustainable behaviour change. And we also help 12- to 16-year-olds get on a positive path, develop essential vocational skills, and improve their employment prospects.
Our expertise for engaging children and young people is honed by combining grassroots experience with national best practices. At SportInspired, we understand that the biggest obstacle preventing children from participating in sports is a lack of enjoyment. That’s why inspiring children to have FUN is at the core of everything we do.
When children and young people have fun, positive experiences that boost their confidence, they are more likely to stay active in the future. And active children and young people are not only healthier, they also tend to be happier, more resilient, and more trusting of others.
Our model
In over 15 years of working across the UK, we have supported tens of thousands of children from some of the most deprived communities.
In these communities, a high number of children are overweight or obese by age 11 and antisocial behaviour, along with violent crime amongst young people, are on the rise. Physical inactivity and disengagement are major contributors to these issues, with a high cost to society. Through our programmes, we give children the chance to try new, locally available sports where fun, personal development and community connection are the focus rather than their sporting ability.
Start
Kai is 8 years old and lives in one of London’s most deprived boroughs, Tower Hamlets. Kai lacks confidence, is disruptive in school and has never engaged in sport.
Co-create
SportInspired unites Kai’s school with 4 other local schools and tailors a 9-12 month programme responding to children like Kai’s needs.
Festival
Kai joins 200 children from his neighbouring schools at a sports festival where he is supported by teenagers and volunteers to enjoy new sports such as street dance, parkour and karate.
Legacy
Kai tells SportInspired that out of the 6 sports he tried at the festival he loved karate best. We set up 20 weeks of a karate legacy club at Kai’s school.
Sustain
Funding for the well-attended club continues through SportInspired or the school itself Kai’s teachers say his confidence has rocketed, he is better engaged in school and now wants to stay active.
